    Και στη γλώσσα της πολεοδομίας; Maybe "front yard setback" or "front yard setback area" (συνδυάζοντας το front setback/front setback area του cougr με το front yard που πρότεινες εσυ)? Strictly speaking though, I think it's the "front setback" or "front setback area" - as cougr said - which...

    O «λογχισμένος ορίζοντας» της Νέας Υόρκης

    Maybe it means "hewn or roughly-hewn"/"roughly chiseled/hacked (away)" - as in the landscape was roughly cut and shaped (you could say mercilessly so, by the wild winds) - giving rise to the bleak, rugged landscape?

    Πού μπαίνει η κτητική αντωνυμία;

    I rendered it into English to try and make sense of it - you know me. Otherwise it's all Greek to me. I have no problem with innovative investments/ innovative investment products - but it's the "in technology/ στη τεχνολογία" part that confused me/threw me a little. If we were talking about...

    Πού μπαίνει η κτητική αντωνυμία;

    Δηλαδή, μιλάμε για επενδύσεις σε τεχνολογικές καινοτομίες (εν προκειμένω) - το ισοδύναμου του investment(s) in technological innovations; Στα αγγλικά το innovative investment θα αναφερόταν μόνο σε περιπτώσεις που η επένδυση θα διέφερε (από τις έως τώρα) - δηλαδή για μια καινούργια μέθοδο.

    Πού μπαίνει η κτητική αντωνυμία;

    "Η Εταιρεία πρόσφατα παρουσίασε στο κοινό το σχέδιο των καινοτόμων της επενδύσεων στην τεχνολογία". Δηλαδή οι επενδύσεις είναι καινοτόμες; From the wording/syntax of the sentence above, I'm getting that the plan has to do with "innovative investments in technology" - maybe I'm misinterpreting...

    The marinated octopus beggars description......

    I think Theseus was trying to figure out why "I have a pet cat" was interpreted and treated as if having the meaning "I pet a cat" (=χαϊδεύω γάτα, by dr7x) which may have been a subtle double-entendre (in English, at least; if you allow your dirty mind to run free)? I see a bon mot of triple...

    σηκώνει πολύ νερό

    A fishy statement (on the other hand) may hold no water, but at least it can swim in it (even if it's dead in the water). ;)

    σηκώνει πολύ νερό

    Why not just "iffy" or "up in the air", then? air/water - what's the difference? The statement is iffy = the statement is "up in the air " = η δήλωση σηκώνει πολύ νερό?

    σηκώνει πολύ νερό

    Καλή εξήγηση, Θεμη. Open-ended? An open-ended statement/opinion/question, etc? Μια δήλωση/άποψη "σηκώνει πολύ νερό" when it "is open-ended"?

    σηκώνει πολύ νερό

    Seeing there's an "ocean of possible interpretations" here, which bears an ocean of discussion (and as there are only so many hours in a day), I'm going to bed .. and bid you all a goodnight. :)

    σηκώνει πολύ νερό

    The last three lines (οι τρεις τελευταίες αράδες) allow an ocean of interpretive possibilities? ... an ocean of possibilities? (Οι ωκεανοί σηκώνουν πολύ νερό!) :cheek:

    Μήπως αναφέρεται σε κάτι (μια καινοτομία ή καινούργια ιδέα/θεωρία) που βρίσκεται σε αρμονία με τις προηγούμενες πεποιθήσεις ή αντιλήψεις (αντί σε λογική ρήξη, ας πούμε), δηλαδή σε κάτι που ακούγεται λογικό και φυσικό (και όχι εξεζητημένο/ανεξήγητο);

    φέρνω / ρίχνω / πιάνω (κάποιον) στο φιλότιμο

    Άλλα δυο από το καλάθι των αχρήστων, ίσως; (probably already rejected?) - fair play and better nature. Appeal to someone's better nature/sense of fair play (along the lines of nickel's sense of honour)? Definition of better nature. : the more virtuous, amiable, or kindly instincts of a person...

    πράκτορας κύρους

    More guesswork ... (some context would be useful). Another possibility - "authoritative agent"? .. who is perhaps someone with the authority or who has been given the authority or (more importantly perhaps) is considered an authority - an expert - maybe unquestionably so (who can interpret the...

    Yes, I thought as much. Just thought I better kick the tyres (all the same) and look under the hood to make sure. I appreciate your help (and nickel's) :)

    on behalf of

    "On behalf of myself" sounds somewhat stilted, too(and unnecessary), as the speech is in the first person (in the given example) - I mean, who else would you be speaking on behalf of (apart from your wife)? - but I think it's necessary. You're right. "On behalf of my wife, also"?

    on behalf of

    If a speech is delivered in the first person and on behalf of others, where it would be reasonable to expect that the speaker is also speaking on their own behalf (see example below), is it safe to assume that it would be interpreted in this way? - would the speaker still need to explicitly...

    Thanks, SBE. You've made me stop and think about this. My instincts are telling me ..working with your examples. Yes to dissertation topic over dissertation's topic. And to office lobby over office's lobby - but for some reason I'd be equally happy with "building's lobby" or building lobby...

    Maybe formally —you could be right? (it never really occurred to me until you pointed it out) το "subject's topic" το βρίσκεις λάθος; (επισήμως μπορεί να είναι; ) or "subject's essence" or "substance's physical properties" ?
