Since we're discussing "anything under the sun", how about the sun's lost siblings? One likely candidate has been discovered, about 110 light-years away. I found this interesting... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VOW4xdHd7U

και της γυναίκας μου (αυτή "αποφάνθηκε" - she's the cheese expert of the family, after all - ότι ήταν για πέταγμα).

Δυο περιπτώσεις έρχονται στο νου: a couple of anecdotes.

λόγω κεκτημένης ταχύτητας = out of (force of) habit, out of sheer momentum

Just adding ... strictly speaking, with "autopilot" you're "zoned out", "switched off" and doing things, performing actions automatically, certainly without thinking - but you're not acting under any urge or being driven by some "force/getting carried away by (sheer) momentum/κεκτημένη...

λόγω κεκτημένης ταχύτητας = out of (force of) habit, out of sheer momentum

I know this thread is done and dusted, so sorry if I'm interloping and feel free to ignore(I've been busy during the week). Δεν ξέρω αν ταιριάζει και το "impulsively" (for the general sense of the term); I'm...

    gravity displacement

Λογικά θα πρέπει να συμβάλλει και η πίεση του ατμού; So you're right to be wary.

    Bon mots

The general bonhomie (plural bonhomies? - is there even a plural?) on this forum is to be admired. :)

wave of the future = η (κυρίαρχη) τάση του μέλλοντος, η τάση των πραγμάτων

    Also, surf a tram/train/truck, or hop a tram/train (as in train hopping/surfing, etc..). Steal a ride on a tram/train/etc.

αυτοδυναμία = outright control, single-party majority, governing majority, (απόλυτη πλειοψηφία) full majority, absolute majority

I was talking about single parties, not coalitions, and probably got ahead of myself. So, you're right. So, single-party governing majority - instead of single-party majority, perhaps? (I don't know why, but I keep coming back to Syriza). It's always based on context, cougr. Let's take the...

αυτοδυναμία = outright control, single-party majority, governing majority, (απόλυτη πλειοψηφία) full majority, absolute majority

Interesting terms, nickel, and no qualifiers to quibble over. ;) Thanks for the discussion, cougr. Always enjoy our little stoushes. We both play hard, but it's always in the right spirit and for the right reason.

αυτοδυναμία = outright control, single-party majority, governing majority, (απόλυτη πλειοψηφία) full majority, absolute majority

But the point is, it is being used as a single-term equivalent to "αυτοδυναμία" (politically speaking) - we need to accept that. It is a fait accompli. In the right context - it might be superfluous to choose absolute majority or take-your-pick majority over the simpler and more to the point...

αυτοδυναμία = outright control, single-party majority, governing majority, (απόλυτη πλειοψηφία) full majority, absolute majority

Syriza almost reached a majority, fell 2 seats shy of it - I guess for all intents and purposes it did - it only needs a deal with 2 independents. So either the article writer you're referring to does not have a complete grasp of the term (which I doubt), or, more likely, he's/she's prone to...

αυτοδυναμία = outright control, single-party majority, governing majority, (απόλυτη πλειοψηφία) full majority, absolute majority

Apologies for all the toing and froing. Again, I emphasise I only brought it up as a possible and perhaps acceptable single-word term, in response to the OP. I'm not advocating that it should be used instead/ahead of the other terms, of course. The point is, however, the term is being used...

αυτοδυναμία = outright control, single-party majority, governing majority, (απόλυτη πλειοψηφία) full majority, absolute majority

I'm not arguing its merits, cougr, I just brought it up as a possible and acceptable single term equivalent, that's all - in response to the original post by sarant. If you google search "achieve a majority" you'll find plenty of results, and in all instances I've come across it is clear...

αυτοδυναμία = outright control, single-party majority, governing majority, (απόλυτη πλειοψηφία) full majority, absolute majority

It's an important distinction, nickel. However, re: the single term "majority, wherever it's being used; I think we can safely assume that it would be referring to (or even be short for) "majority government", or "majority government status" - and not to "simple majority". So there shouldn't be...

αυτοδυναμία = outright control, single-party majority, governing majority, (απόλυτη πλειοψηφία) full majority, absolute majority

Για μονολεκτικό όρο, γιατί όχι το majority, σκέτο; Greece's Syriza did not quite achieve majority. It fell 1 seat short of majority. It sounds fine to me.

quantitative easing (QE) = ποσοτική χαλάρωση

Thanks, cougr, for your vote of confidence. :) Anyway, because it is a gradual process - that's why a term ending in "ing" (a doing word) was chosen. It's no coincidence. Choosing another word (other than easing, but probably not the best choice) to help illustrate, it comes across as...

quantitative easing (QE) = ποσοτική χαλάρωση

Hi, cougr. I actually agree with Domino - he has made some valid points. I too see the term this way (as you've described it) - i.e., the creation of money "out of thin air/with a few pushes of a button" in order to buy and liquidate bonds and risky assets from the shell-shocked banks (post...
