    "Πράγμα" = Long standing love?

Good morning friends, I was approached by someone in the United States who is developing a line of candles with the named "Pragma" which she said means "Long standing love in Ancient Greek". She was asking what the Greek spelling would be. Can someone confirm this and tell me what the spelling...

Head waiter and the nuances of "Προϊστάμενος"

Okay, here's another twist to this: What if you wanted to tell the waiter that you want to see his "superior" meaning the person who is in charge. If you know that the owner is there, you could say "αφεντικο" but if you don't know whether the owner is there, would you say "Τον προιστάμενο...

Best wishes to an actor before a play

If you really want to say something sincere (and not ironic) the only thing that comes to mind is "Κουράγιο" but that might sound a little negative. Like something you would say to someone who is going in for an operation. "Σε σκεφτόμαστε" might be the most appropriate statement...

    To apply a discount retroactively

Good morning friends. Talking to a vendor about switching to a cheaper package, how would you say “… and you will apply the discount retroactively”? It wouldn’t be “θα μου δώσετε το χαμηλοτέρο πάγιο αναδρομικά;”? Would it? Thank you.

Best wishes to an actor before a play

... or to a musician before a performance, friends. Is there a Greek expression that is appropriate like "Shake a leg" is in English? Or ;) for that matter to a school teacher before they start a new year? Thank you.

    Greek congratulatory phrase

... Or would one use the word when referring to a book that is "well-read"?

    Greek congratulatory phrase

Good morning friends, I ran in to this thread this morning and wondering if someone can tell me confirm that "Καλοδιάβαστο" is a word expressing "best wishes" used toward someone who has just acquired a new book... Would the store clerk selling the book say it to a buyer, or someone who is...

Head waiter and the nuances of "Προϊστάμενος"

Dear friends, @Zazula, and @Marinos Trying to clarify here. If one wanted to ask a waiter to have the maître d come over and you knew that he (the maître d) wasn’t an owner) what expression would one use? «Σε παρακαλώ, φώναξε τον προϊστάμενο. Θέλω να του ζητήσω κάτι. » And for would the head...

    Is the Pope Catholic?

I like that, Nickel "Τι κάνει νιάου νιάου στα κεραμίδια;" I once heard Tsipras say it in an interview. Thank you!

    Is the Pope Catholic?

Good morning friends, Two posts in one day, if I may. Wondering if there is anything in Greek that communicates the essence of "Is the Pope Catholic?" which is a phrase that is, of course, used as a response to someone who asks a question whose answer if very obvious like "Is Mitsotakis prime...

Head waiter and the nuances of "Προϊστάμενος"

Good morning friends, 2 questions, if I may, Is there a Greek phrase for the Head Waiter of a restaurant like the “Maitre d”? I guess you could ask for the “Ο υπεύθυνος του μαγαζιού” but just wondering if there’s a specific word for that…. And… sort of similarly… the word “προϊστάμενος” what...

    repertory cinema = ταινίες ρεπερτορίου

Good morning friends, Repertory cinema is an expression referring to the tradition of rereleasing films from the past-- something that is often done in the summers with old Hitchcock films, Aliki Vougouklaki, Tzeni Karezi etc. I am wondering if there is a Greek equivalent to this expression...

    For Rent Sticker

Two for one day, friends. I hope that's okay. The little stickers that one sees on the side of apartment buildings in Athens that say ΕΝΟΙΚΙΑΖΕΤΑΙ could you tell me what they are called? I mean, for example, "αφίσα" or ῾ετικετα῾ or something else? Thank you. Cosmas

    to coordinate our energies

Good morning friends and happy belated Δεκαπενταύγουστο. I am wondering what is the best phrase to use when you're talking to someone in Greek about "coordinating our energies". "Συντονίσουμε τις προσπάθειες " comes to mind but that doesn't quite seem right. Wondering what might be a better...

hospice = ξενώνας ανακουφιστικής φροντίδας, ίδρυμα περίθαλψης χρονίως πασχόντων

Thank you, Nickel. "ξενώνας ανακουφιστικής φροντίδας" και "κέντρο ανακουφιστικής φροντίδας" are both right and when I googled them I was able to find several around Athens. I really appreciate it.

hospice = ξενώνας ανακουφιστικής φροντίδας, ίδρυμα περίθαλψης χρονίως πασχόντων

Dear friends, I'm having trouble finding the Greek equivalent for "Hospice" -- a center for taking care of dying patients -- where patients that are dying are taken care of and the only treatment is pain killers. I've looked it up in several online dictionaries and can't seem to find anything...
