What does καταδικασμένος από χέρι mean?

There is such a wealth of information here, which I shall work through diligently. I thank everybody for their contributions and cannot single out anyone for special praise, except cougr for his translations. I thought it was a simple question but nothing on lexilogia is simple! But if Theseus with only one to help him could figure out the labyrinth, I am much better served than he was!🤡

Καλή η μετάφραση των διαλόγων, αλλά έχω μια ένσταση: το «μη σου πω και ρεκτιφιέ» φέρνει περισσότερο σε «ίσως (ακόμα) και ρεκτιφιέ», δηλαδή «μπορεί να χρειαστεί και ρεκτιφιέ, να μην αρκέσει η αλλαγή φλάντζας». Αγγλιστί:

"For sure! Maybe even a recondition".

Το «not to mention», από την άλλη, παραπέμπει σε «δεν χρειάζεται ν' αναφέρω» ή «για να μην ξεχνάμε», κάτι συμπληρωματικό που αναφέρουμε τελευταίο αλλά θέλουμε να δείξουμε ότι έχει τη σημασία του.

It should be added, though, that these are two notably different concepts: από χέρι connotes you're well aware of whatever hand you've been dealt (literally or not), and that's the very reason why you consider yourself doomed or what not, whereas σανβουαρ seems merely to connote a gambler attitude of sorts (as in, I don't need to look at my cards, I "know" they're good

Αυτό το "not to mention" παρόλο που λέει " περιττό να αναφέρω" και το αναφέρει, είναι όπως το " needless to say" που τελικά το λέμε!!!

Just one query from all this excellent information:- μου τσιμπάει τα λαδάκια. No dictionary, whether slang or otherwise, has this idiom for ‘to burn oil’. Nor could I find the phrase anywhere where τσιμπάει = καίει. Is this an idiom? If so, its meaning is elusive. Apart from this, I learn so much every day. Thanks so very much to everyone. 🙏🤗😀

Perhaps it would've been more accurate if I had said it's eating up or consuming oil. I only chose "burning" in light of the fact that it was billowing out blue smoke.

"Τσιμπάει λάδια/λάδι" stems from the expression "τρώει λάδια/λάδι".

"Τσιμπάω" is used in a figurative sense to mean "to eat" - typically a light snack or something in a hurry.

Οι κοινωνικές συμβάσεις και οι πρακτικές τους ανάγκες έχουν μια τάση να αψηφούν την απόλυτη λογική… Και όπως σίγουρα γνωρίζεις, οι φαινομενικά αυτοαναιρούμενες φράσεις που αναφέρεις έχουν έναν σημαντικό διπλωματικό ρόλο: να εκφράζουν κάτι σημαντικό που ο άλλος ίσως να αγνοεί, χωρίς όμως τη συγκατάβαση που θα συνόδευε μια ανοιχτή δήλωση ότι υφίσταται, ή έστω ότι θα μπορούσε να υφίσταται τέτοια άγνοια. Ολόκληρος χορός για να μην τεθεί ευθέως το προφανές: ότι πολλά πράγματα δεν είναι γνωστά σε όλους.

Και έκανα ακριβώς το ίδιο πράγμα εδώ. :D

This may be a bit of an arbitrary parsing, but what the heck…
I'm reading their example, Theseus, as what I guess you could call an "extended" slang usage of sorts…

In addition to cougr's perfectly accurate point, τσιμπάω (predominantly in its simple past form: τσίμπησα) can often mean obtain, which can be further specified as either purchasing (πήγα χτες Πρωτοπορία και τσίμπησα καινούργιο βιβλιαράκι), knicking (τσίμπησα [στη ζούλα] μια κολόνια για τη μάνα μου από τα ταξ-φρι του αεροδρομίου), or even in terms of more "abstract conquests" (μια βδομάδα διακοπές πήγε η κουφάλα, τσίμπησε γκομενάκι)…

More importantly (given the context at hand), τσιμπάω can also connote a slight increase. One rather particular example that comes to my mind comes from sound engineers' parlance: Τσίμπα λίγο τη φωνή γιατί τη σκεπάζει το μπουζούκι. Likewise, a driving instructor could say: Τσίμπα λίγο το γκάζι στην ανηφόρα.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is already a considerable degree of liberty in the verb's slang usages, so anything with a decent potential to be associated with either eating, knicking or increasing fits the bill pretty naturally...
