What does καταδικασμένος από χέρι mean?

In the second paragraph of the article these word occur:-

It is the phrase από χέρι that makes no sense in this context. Does it mean ‘out of hand’ i.e. it is an idiom in Greek which means the same as the English phrase?
 
"Καταδικασμένος από χέρι" basically means that someone or something is condemned to fail from the outset/certain to fail. The term "από χέρι" when used idiomatically often means that something is a certainty or undoubted.

Χιλια ευχαριστώ, κουγρ! A Greek change from the countless English ways in which I have tried to thank you. So the meaning is similar to the English idiom, which means ‘completely without thinking about or discussing it’: I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand means ‘completely’. Also ‘to refuse something out of hand means ‘without discussing it / totally’. 🙏🤗
 
Regarding similarity in meaning to "out of hand" ... you can probably draw some similarity or parallel in the negative sense (καταδικασμένος απο χέρι) and poetically you can say, for instance, "fate has dismissed his chances out of hand" (effectively doomed him, without second thought).
If you give fate agency (by personifying it) - and you can do that, poetically.

You can interpret it and think of it that way, I guess.

But, there's also a positive sense ... for instance, "κερδισμένος από χέρι" (guaranteed from the get-go to succeed) ... what is it that fate is refusing or dismissing so decisively in this context?

I saw dismiss as a negative (you're refusing or denying someone something good without thinking twice about it) - but, on another level, whether it's good or bad also depends on what's being rejected (winning or losing), so I take your point, cougr.

In this case, fate is refusing them bad luck or failure. o_O
 
With ‘winning’ as, for example, κερδισμένος από χέρι’ we could say ‘won hands down’ for an easy victory. I doubt if there is a precise Greek equivalent of.’hands down’i.e, in a phrase using the Greek χέρι. But I know αναμφίβολα and am aware of αδιαμφισβήτητα and ασυζητητί but would probably have used by default εύκολα. According to the OED The source of the phrase ‘hands down’ is from horse racing. The earliest examples of the phrase comes from 19th century sporting papers where horses win races "hands down," meaning that victory is so secure that the jockey can relax and drop the reins before crossing the finish line. But I suppose that is general knowledge. Just to confuse the issue: a ‘hacked up horse’ is a phrase used to describe a horse who has won comfortably! 🤷‍♂️😵‍💫
 
There is a phrase in French which is also used in common Greek " sans voir" and it means "beyond any doubt", " without questioning" or even better " before it started" If you are familiar with this French phrase I think you will get the meaning.
 
Thanks, ambrosia! Presumably Greeks write sans voir in Greek letters, as σαν βουάρ. I have come cross the phrase in French as meaning ‘without seeing/failing to see’. The Greek usage that you mention is clearly an extension of the French. Can you give me a couple of example sentences in Greek conversation so that I can use the phrase confidently. Thanks in advance 😁

Σωστά, όταν χαρτοπαιζουμε τα χαρτιά πάντα είναι κρυφά, (σαν βουάρ) δεν τα βλέπουμε, μέχρι να τα φανερώσουμε!
 
Never heard of σάνβουαρ/σανβουάρ… might it be that the occasional usage chiefly occurs down South? (No info, just a guess…)

It should be added, though, that these are two notably different concepts: από χέρι connotes you're well aware of whatever hand you've been dealt (literally or not), and that's the very reason why you consider yourself doomed or what not, whereas σανβουαρ seems merely to connote a gambler attitude of sorts (as in, I don't need to look at my cards, I "know" they're good…)
 
Sorry about the accent. Σάνβουαρ appears to be the best accentuation, m_a_a. I was careless. The phrase seems to be used as στάνταρ(τ) is in some ways in the sense of σιγούρα. The reference I gave at https://www.slang.gr/lemma/15148-sanbouar is worth looking at, although I found the examples difficult to translate into English (after all it is Greek slang!).
Here they are, if a more expert colleague than I am can translate them for me:-
1 - Τέτοια παιχτούρα και να χαραμίζεται στο πρωτάθλημα της ψωρογιώργαινας;
- Από του χρόνου τον βλέπω σε καμιά πριμέρα και βάλε.
- Σάνβουαρ!
2 - Μάστορα, μου τσιμπάει λαδάκια, βγάζει μπλε καπνό απ' την εξάτμιση κι ανεβάζει θερμοκρασίες.. Πάμε για φλάντζα;
- Σάνβουαρ! Μη σου πω και ρεκτιφιέ...
I know what ρεκτιφιέ means! Botox, removal of double chins &c. In general, a forlorn attempt to reverse the onset of bodily decline. The rest is somewhat obscure. 🧐

Η λέξη όμως εδώ δείχνει να χρησιμοποιείται με την αρχική σημασία, που αφορά τις επισκευές αυτοκινήτων.

Παρεμπιπτόντως, ούτε εγώ έχω ακούσει ποτέ για «σάνβουαρ».

Τεκμήριο αθωότητας δεν σημαίνει ότι απαγορεύονται οι καταγγελίες. Τεκμήριο αθωότητας έχει και η BP για την πετρελαιοκηλίδα στον κόλπο του Μεξικού. Και λοιπόν;
