Αν το "extenuating" δεν είναι λάθος, ξενίζει ... η άλλη πιθανότητα είναι ότι η λέξη που είχε στο μυαλό του ο συγγραφέας (or was transcribed incorrectly by someone else) ήταν το "attenuating", που έχει το ίδιο ηχητικό μοτίβο με το "extenuating" (ακούγεται το "tenuating" κομμάτι και στις δύο λεξεις) και ταιριάζει καλύτερα στην πρόταση (strange phrasing, but I can think of "attenuating conversation" as a conversation that attenuates the tension or lightens the mood).

I think a comma would have made sense, too (after "other") ... as no other attenuating/extenuating conversation (without the comma) implies that the main or only conversation that was taking place during the autopsy was also lightening the mood?
Likewise, no other extraneous conversation (without the comma) implies that the conversation taking place during the autopsy was irrelevant to it (it was the only extraneous one taking place).
I think the word "other" confuses?

The full paragraph is: "There is very little talking; they discuss only what is essential. There is no other extenuating conversation going on in the room."

Hence, "other" builds on the first sentence, creating the necessary contrast between the "essential" discussion mentioned there.

Attenuating (or Duke_of_Waltham's reading of extenuating itself, as talk that lightens the mood) fits the "most solemn" framing.

I should have mentioned it from the outset, but what I had wanted to say is that If not outright incorrect, this type of phrasing is definitely not established and, as our discussion illustrates, certainly not clear. It strikes me more as a case of sesquipedalianism* and obfuscation . Or as nickel might say: λέξεις για φιγούρα και τρικλοποδιές.

Με αυτό δεν θα διαφωνήσω. Άλλωστε ο Τσιάτσιο δεν μοιάζει να είναι ιδιαίτερα μεγάλης ηλικίας, για να πεις ότι θυμάται κάποια παλιότερη χρήση που έχουν ξεχάσει οι υπόλοιποι.

Πάντως, μιας και είναι το νήμα των λαθών… αποδίδεται ορθώς το forensic investigator ως «ιατροδικαστικός ερευνητής»; Μόλις ξαναδιάβασα αυτό εδώ το νήμα, και μ' έπιασε μια μικρή απελπισία.

Νομίζω ότι είχε στο μυαλό του κάτι σαν extraneous conversation. Το "only what is essential" οδηγεί αρκετά φυσικά εκεί (the full paragraph helped).
Όταν μια λέξη βγαίνει έξω από το καθιερωμένο της περιβάλλον (εν προκειμενω, το extenuating circumstances), η σημασία της συχνά θολώνει. Δεν αποκλείεται να έχουμε κάτι τέτοιο εδώ.

Ο όρος στο άρθρο ήταν το 'medical examiner'.
Είχα στο μυαλό μου την 'ιατροδικαστική έρευνα" και λόγω βιασύνης και εκ παραδρομής, βγήκε ένα αυθόρμητο... 'ιατροδικαστικός ερευνητής'.
Το κατάλαβα λίγο αργότερα το λάθος, αλλά δεν ήθελα να ενοχλήσω πάλι τον Nickel και την παρέα για μια διόρθωση.
