When I learned on Wednesday that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff referred to Vladimir Putin as “a humanitarian” to Putin’s face, I went into ontological shock. I didn’t know what “ontological shock” was when I learned Witkoff said that. In fact, I had to go online to find something that described what I was feeling. That’s how I found the term “ontological shock.”
Ontological shock is a profound disorientation that occurs when an experience completely shatters your foundational assumptions about reality. It causes you to question your worldview and your sanity.
For example, when you’re feeding crusts of bread to pigeons in the park and a pterodactyl swoops down, grabs the crust you’re holding and flaps away, taking part of your hand with it, that’s ontological shock.
Or when a framed oil painting of flowers hanging in your living room leaps off the wall and bites you on the leg. That’s ontological shock.
I marveled at and was horrified by and was staggered that anyone could say something so completely false about a man as irretrievably evil as Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.
But as they say, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. When I learned the context in which Witkoff said that, it was even worse. I was filled with red rage.
