Φαμιλιά, από λόου σου

I’m not so sure about the meaning of this whole passage από τη «Φόνισσα» του Παπαδιαμάντη 15. ΙΕ’

– Μεγάλο ζαράρι μ’ ευρήκε να ’χω το συμπάθειο, θεια-Γιαννού! Τρανό, άτυχο ντέρτι! Η φαμιλιά μ’, όξ’ από λόου σου, βγήκε την νύχτα προς νερού της, όξ απ’ το καλύβι, κυρα-Γιαννού μ’, κ’ εγύρισε πίσω κακά κι αδέξια...

The word φαμιλιά here as ‘family’ doesn’t seem to make sense. In fact, the sense I make of the whole extract is greatly limited:-

“It was a great disaster [like this translation!!] to have your sympathy, Aunty Iannou. A transient, unfortunate pain! My family …..went out at night to the toilet.., out of the hut, my dear Mrs Iannou, and returned badly and awkwardly.”

Φαμιλιά here means his wife, the principal member of his family, as clarified right after this:

Ντούρμα βγήκε, κ’ εγύρισε μονοκοπανιά, χτυπημένη, ξεγλωσσασμένη, αγρούνιστη... Χτυπήθηκε, μακριά από λόγου σου... Η γλώσσα της κρεμασμένη, όξ’ απ’ το σιαγόνι της, τη λαλιά της την έχασε, την ηύρε κακή θερμασιά και κρυάδα κι ασπασμοί. Κείτεται στο στρώμα μισοπεθαμένη!
– Αλήθεια; Ω, αμαρτίες!... Και πότε έγινε αυτό;
– Προχτές το βράδυ, την νύχτα, τα μεσάνυχτα, θεια-Γιαννού! Όξου από λόου σου, να ’χω το συμπάθειο...

and then later on:

Την εσπέραν η Φραγκογιαννού ευρίσκετο εις την Πέρα-Ράχην, εις το καλύβι του Καμπαναχμάκη. Η σύζυγος του βοσκού, γυνή πλέον ή τριάκοντα ετών και μήτηρ πέντε τέκνων, έκειτο επί της κλίνης. Ήτο εις αθλίαν κατάστασιν. Το μούτρο της είχε στραβώσει από την νευρικήν προσβολήν, η γλώσσα της εκρέματο έξω του στόματος, κ' εξέπεμπεν ανάρθρους φωνάς.

Λόου σου means "you / yourself" (του λόγου σου), and όξ' από λόου σου would normally mean "besides you" but here, judging by the way it's used, it seems to mean "μακριά από σένα" as an apotropaic phrase, like "μακριά από λόγου σου" above.

Thanks both for all your efforts on my behalf; they are greatly appreciated: so putting it all together it reads now: ‘‘A great disaster has befallen me to merit compassion. A tough, unfortunate, misery…κτλ” On November 4th 2016 I was given this book as a Christmas gift by a colleague on lexilogia.gr and I am now ready to read it in Greek. I don’t know what dialect it is in, if any. but I would appreciate a comment from someone on this question.

The narrative was largely in Katharevousa but also contained elements of Papadiamantis' idiosyncratic style, occasionally interspersed with ecclesiastical language. The dialogues were an admixture of the demotic Greek spoken in rural areas of the time combined with the dialect spoken on the island of Skiathos and perhaps some other regional dialects.
