Should I understand this statement exactly as it is written? Or does it contain any metaphorical meaning, just as "βίος και πολιτεία"?
Thanks.

As daeman suggests there's no metaphorical connotations to it.

However, occasionally you may come across it in a secular context in which case you can read it as someone's trials and tribulations or hardships in life.

Eg. "Μας διηγήθηκε τον βίο και τα πάθη του" = he told us about his life and its tribulations/ hardships etc.

I only mention it because in the past I came across this secular usage of the phrase in a Greek tv show and the English subtitles read "his life and passion" - not very good.🙂
