2 different kinds of Street Signs in Greek

I am looking for the appropriate words for street signs as in the formal metallic signs that display the speed limit, or some restrictions for a particular area… and the cardboard kind that are maybe handwritten and are put up by the local authorities when a forest is off limits to visitors during a heat wave. The word that comes to my mind is “πινακίδα” but I have been told that “πινακίδα” only applies to license plates. If that is correct what would be the correct words for these kinds of signs, please? I want to post something on Facebook in Greek and want to make sure it is not misleading.

In that sense, we typically use the word in its plural form: Πάρκαρε σε θέση αναπήρων ο βλάκας και του πήραν τις πινακίδες.

You can use either πινακίδα or ταμπέλα in either of the scenarios you're mentioning:

–Μην τρέχεις ρε συ! Δεν βλέπεις την πινακίδα/ταμπέλα; Με 30 σου λέει!

–Έχει μια πινακίδα/ταμπέλα εκεί πέρα που λέει «απαγορεύεται η είσοδος».

When it comes to street signs, you might also encounter the term σήμανση, chiefly in formal contexts, such as driver's handbooks etc.

Interesting. If you want to tell someone to put up a sign telling tourists that “The following area is off-limits” would you say “Ανεβάστε πινακίδες (βρε) παιδία για τους τουρίστες στα αγγλικά πού λένε ότι η είσοδος στην εξής περιοχή απαγορεύεται;» In this context does it matter if you say “πινακίδες” or “ταμπέλες”?

I'd probably go with «Βάλτε μια ταμπέλα / καναδυό ταμπέλες [β]ρε παιδιά για τους τουρίστες, στα αγγλικά, [να λέει/λένε] ότι απαγορεύεται η είσοδος στην τάδε περιοχή»… Ταμπέλα feels more casual. But it wouldn't strike me as odd or whatever if someone used πινακίδα instead…
