Ως φανατικός των Όσκαρ και παρόμοιων γκλαμουροεκδηλώσεων, διάβαζα στην NYT τις προβλέψεις για μεθαύριο και έπεσα πάνω σε φράση που δεν μου έβγαινε αμέσως σε σωστό ρέτζιστερ:
Best actor: Jean Dujardin, “The Artist”
Contender: George Clooney, “The Descendants”
Long shots: Demian Bichir, “A Better Life”; Gary Oldman, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”; Brad Pitt, “Moneyball”
Probably the hardest major race to call. George Clooney was the front-runner, for his grieving, cuckolded father, until Jean Dujardin, the French Clooney, as his publicists call him, picked up the Screen Actors Guild prize last month. There is a lot of crossover in that group with the Academy’s actors branch, its largest, so that vote weighs heavily. And there is much affection for Mr. Dujardin’s silent film star, affection he stoked expertly on the circuit, language barrier be damned.
Εκτός από δύο μάλλον πρόστυχες εκφράσεις που πέρασαν από το νου μου (και μπορείτε να σκεφτείτε και μόνοι σας), κατέληξα σε κάτι άχρωμο:
χωρίς να μετρά καθόλου το φράγμα της γλώσσας
Δεν το τυράννησα πολύ, θα αφήσω σε σας τη χαρά. Έψαξα όμως να δω τι λένε τα λεξικά και έφαγα πόρτα. Προς το παρόν, έχω μόνο ένα εύρημα, από το Cambridge Dictionary of American Idioms:
something be damned
this thing is not important
They tend to select the best software packages available, and costs be damned. If you repeat a lie often enough, people will think it must be true, facts be damned.
Usage notes: usually used with plural nouns, as in the examples
