The first collaboration of Bracken and Wilder was their script for an Ernst Lubitsch film, Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1938). It begins with perhaps the best example from classical-era Hollywood of the meet-cute. In Hollywood parlance then and now, film-makers tried to avoid 'in the nose' or predictable touches. Staying ahead of the audience with unexpected twists in plotting was one way to keep the audience interested. Especially in romantic comedy, the rule of thumb was that the hero and heroine should not meet in an ordinary way. Ed Sikov writes that Wilder even claimed to have kept a notebook with ideas for clever ways for characters to meet.

Ένα από τα πιο εξωφρενικά meet-cutes σε πρόσφατη ταινία έχει η Barney's Version (2010) (Η εκδοχή του Μπάρνεϊ, Με τη ματιά του Μπάρνεϊ, αν θέλετε — στις αίθουσες εδώ κυκλοφόρησε με τίτλο «Ο τρόπος του Μπάρνεϊ»). Στη γαμήλια δεξίωση του δεύτερου γάμου του ο Μπάρνεϊ (Πολ Τζιαμάτι) συναντά την (αγία) Μίριαμ (Ρόζαμουντ Πάικ) και αρκούν λίγα λεπτά συζήτησης για να την ερωτευτεί τόσο που να είναι έτοιμος να φύγει μαζί της από τη δεξίωση. Ο Μπάρνεϊ είναι μανιώδης καπνιστής πούρων και η Μίριαμ τού λέει το παρακάτω ωραίο (κάτι μου λέει ότι ο Μπάρνεϊ είναι και μανιώδης συλλέκτης τριβιδιών):

— Haven't a clue.
— Fine cigars are rolled by hand. And the men and women whose job this is chip in from their own wages and employ lectors, these people who read to them all day long while they work. It's entertainment to make the day pass. At the factory which produces the Montecristo, the workers' favourite story was...

— Nice touch, huh?
