Γεια σασ! I am new to Greek and not sure I'm at the level to understand most of what's here, but I was recommended to come here from another forum. If I've posted incorrectly, please let me know.
I am mainly trying to learn Greek to speak with my spouse's family and to learn more about the culture. I have been trying to read Greek newspapers to further both of those goals, and while it's difficult, I'm enjoying it. One thing that I find difficult is the acronyms that are used for various governmental (and other) agencies. I see things like ΟΠΟΚΕΠΕ, ΔΕΘ, ΔΔΑΕ, etc. Some I've been able to look up, but others I've had a harder time figuring out. Even when I have the direct translation of the words, it's not always obvious to me what an agency does. Is there any reference anywhere that might explain these things to a new language learner? It would be great if it had could also explain rough equivalences between Greek agencies and either US or British agencies that handle similar jobs, if such a thing exists.
