Λέει στο forest dieback η Wikipedia:
Forest dieback (also "Waldsterben," a German loan word) is a condition in trees or woody plants in which peripheral parts are killed, either by parasites or due to conditions like acid rain and drought.

Χμ, και πώς θα πεις τότε το forest decline;

Και ξέρω ότι το απο- δεν θα σε ενθουσιάσει, αλλά υπάρχει μπόλικη νέκρωση δασών και λίγη απονέκρωση δασών.

Και Waldsterben είναι θάνατος του δάσους, όχι απλώς παρακμή...

Η "προσαρμοστικότητα αυτόνομων δασών" είναι όλα τα λεφτά ! Δεν θα έπρεπε να αντικατασταθεί από κάτι σαν "αυτοτελής προσαρμογή των δασών" ή κάτι αξιοπρεπέστερο;

Είχα στο μάτι τον δόκτορα λόγω του γερμανικού. Ωστόσο:

Η έκφραση βγαίνει (λέει το OED) από το die back:

14. die back. Said of the recent shoot of a plant: To die from the apex back to the woody or perennial part.
   Cf. die down; herbaceous plants die down to the ground, tender shoots die back to the old wood.
   1850 Beck's Florist Nov. 265 The shrub‥will in a manner prune itself, or at least those shoots that require removing will die back, and there will be only the dead wood to cut away.    1928 F. T. The progressive dying of a shrub or tree shoot from the tip backwards, caused by disease or unfavourable conditions, esp. a disease of fruit trees. ​

Υπάρχει, λοιπόν, στην αρχική σημασία αυτό το progressive. Στον ορισμό για το forest dieback υπάρχει το peripheral.

Η νέκρωση και η απονέκρωση έχουν κάτι το απόλυτο. Κοιτάζω το γαλλικό: Dépérissement forestier. Στο λεξικό: παρακμή, φθορά, μαρασμός.

Damage to forests or waldsterben (forest decay) ? The latter term especially is emotionally charged. It is quite fitting in the example of the forests of the Erzgebirge mentioned at the beginning of this chapter. German forests are characterized better by the term damage of forests. We know far too little about the ecosystem wood or forest yet, but it should be noticed that a strong loss of leaves or needles does also have the effect of more light at the soil level.​

Επομένως, υπάρχει και η πολιτική χροιά των όρων, όχι μόνο η επιστημονική.
