Μια από τις περιπτώσεις που έχει σημασία το αν θα βάλεις απόστροφο ή όχι.

Εμπνευσμένο από τα λάθη που στέλνουν στον Κουίνιον και τα δημοσιεύει στο ηλεδελτίο του:

Αν το ονοματεπώνυμο στην ονομαστική είναι Charlotte Brook τότε το σωστό στην παραπανω φράση είναι Charlotte Brook's.
Αν το ονοματεπώνυμο στην ονομαστική είναι Charlotte Brooks ... πως θα ήταν Charlotte Brooks's ή Charlotte Brooks'. Δεν το έχω 100%.

2. John is the people's choice.

Σωστό.

3. Buster is Janes' dog.

Αν υποθέσουμε ότι η ιδιοκτήτρια λέγεται Jane τότε πρέπει να γραφτεί Jane's. Αν ονονμάζεται Janes (δεν ξέρω αν υπάρχει τέτοιο επίθετο) τότε ... βλέπε Νο1.

4. How's it going today?

Σωστό.

5. Johns' house is amazing.

Αν το σπίτι ανήκει στον John τότε πρέπει να γραφτεί John's. Αν λέγεται Johns στην ονομαστική τότε ... βλέπε Νο 1 (δις).

6. All the teams in the league are going to vote, so it is all the team's choice.

Σωστό.

7. You've got a lot of friends.

Σωστό.

8. They're friends are all very nice.

Σωστό.

9. It's a long way to Manchester.

Σωστό.

10. Its ahead of it's time.

Λάθος.
Το It is ahead μπορεί να γραφτεί It's ahead. Το it's time είναι λάθος, το σωστό είναι its time.

Ξανασκέψου το 6 και το 8.

Για το Brooks's υπάρχει αρκετή συζήτηση πιο πάνω και όχι μόνο, που βασίζεται κυρίως στη σκέψη ότι γνωστά κλασικά ονόματα δεν χρειάζονται δεύτερο s, ονόματα που δημιουργούν σειρά από συριστικούς ήχους καλό είναι να αποφεύγουν το 's της γενικής, και τα υπόλοιπα, ιδίως όσα μπορεί και να παρεξηγηθούν στο άκουσμα, πρέπει να παίρνουν το 's.

Για τα 6 και 8 είδα τις απαντήσεις λίαν συντόμως και διαπίστωσα ότι για άλλη μια φορά με έφαγε η βιασύνη.
Έχω απαντήσει λάθος.

I'd say Aristotelis's, Zacharias's, Dimitris's. And, seeing that Lourdes is pronounced /lʊəd/, I'd say Lourdes's in the genitive /lʊədz/.

Μην παρασύρεσαι από καθημερινές εκφράσεις που πατάνε πάνω σε γνωστές λέξεις, ιδίως αυτή εδώ που έχει ήδη δύο συριστικά, ένα στο τέλος της μιας λέξης και ένα στην αρχή της άλλης (προφέρεται άλλωστε με συμφυρμό, σαν να λέμε for goodness ache). Με τα κύρια ονόματα είναι καλό να βάζουμε 's όταν το όνομα δεν είναι γνωστό και πρέπει να φανεί αν έχει δικό του s στο τέλος ή όχι.
