Καλησπέρα,

Η παράγραφος αφορά στις πρώτες μεθόδους πλοήγησης και χαρτογράφησης. Για να διευκολύνω όποιον έχει το χρόνο και τη διάθεση να ασχοληθεί, δίνω ολόκληρη την περίοδο:

Swell patterns in particular could provide many clues to the location of islands, and were recorded by means of "stick maps" formed by lashing slender sticks together in complex geometrics patterns.

Είδα πώς είναι τα stick maps, αλλά σαν ορολογία δεν το βρήκα πουθενά. Μήπως γνωρίζει κανείς;

Εννοείς αυτό;

Λέει η Βίκι τα ιστορικά:
Stick charts were typically made from the midribs of coconut fronds tied together to form an open framework. Island locations were represented by shells tied to the framework, or by the lashed junction of two or more sticks. The threads represented prevailing ocean surface wave-crests and directions they took as they approached islands and met other similar wave-crests formed by the ebb and flow of breakers. Individual charts varied so much in form and interpretation that the individual navigator who made the chart was the only person who could fully interpret and use it. Use of stick charts and navigation by swells apparently came to demise after World War II, when new electronic technologies made navigation more accessible, and travel between islands by canoe lessened.

Εγώ λέω να τον πεις «χάρτη με ξυλάκια». Υπάρχουν και «χάρτες με κοχύλια». Όλο και κάποιος μεταφραστής θα το έχει μεταφράσει σε κάνα National Geographic, αλλά δεν πρέπει να υπάρχει παγιωμένη απόδοση.

Ναι, Βίκυ, αυτό βρήκα κι εγώ, και αυτό φαντάζομαι πως εννοεί και το κείμενό μου. Αναρωτιέμαι λοιπόν μήπως στη γλώσσα των χαρτογράφων, ας πούμε, υπάρχει κάποια ειδική ονομασία γι΄αυτό το κατασκεύασμα. Τι ζητάω να βρω, ε;
