Μπορούμε να γράψουμε σε κείμενο.....the latter.... χωρίς να έχει προηγηθεί το ... the former...?
Το είδα γραμμένο σε κείμενο σοβαρού βιβλίου έτσι:
... spent the latter part of his career.....

Φυσικά.

Όπως τα ύστερα δεν συνοδεύονται οπωσδήποτε από τα πρότερα.

Επομένως εννοείται εδώ " τα τελευταία χρόνια της καριέρας του" άρα και της ζωής του;

Όχι. Εννοεί μόνο τα τελευταία χρόνια της επαγγελματικής ζωής του.
