"Mogging", a word used playfully to mean outshining, outperforming or upstaging someone or something, has been named as word of the year by the Collins English Dictionary.

A fast-growing slang word among members of Generations Z and Alpha — both online and in everyday conversation — mogging went mainstream in 2026 with a 210% increase in its usage.

Collins' managing director Alex Beecroft said its lexicographers look at "how often words are used" and also "analyse patterns of usage" that reveal the latest linguistic trends.

The selection of mogging as word of the year, he said, "shows how each generation leaves its mark on language".

Collins — one of the UK's major dictionary publishers — draws from a range of sources, including social media, to reflect how the English language is evolving in the UK each year.

Its word of the year for 2025 was "vibe coding" — the art of making an app or website by describing it to artificial intelligence (AI) rather than by writing programming code manually.

Other definitions that made the dictionary's 10-strong shortlist included ghost job, something frustrated jobseekers will be familiar with — when an employer posts a position with no intention of appointing someone.

Hydration break was of course made famous by this year's World Cup. while p(doom) is the estimation of probability of an AI-aided collapse of civilisation.

Manchesterism, a term associated with Prime Minister Andy Burnham, is about the devolution of power to the regions, combining economic growth with social progress.

With the rise of social media, where everyone is constantly sizing up everyone else, the desire to mog (or not be mogged) has seeped into daily life.

Mogging Noel Deyzel, the IFBB Pro Heavyweight bodybuilder standing 6’2 and weighing 287 pounds, will definitely require a person with a better and more massive physique. But no one would have expected that the fitness influencer’s mother would be the one ‘mogging’ him.

Παράλληλα, χρησιμοποιούνται και αντίστοιχες ρηματικές εκφράσεις, όπως το to frame mog (ή to mog someone's frame), όταν κάποιος μειώνει αισθητικά τον διπλανό του εξαιτίας των πιο ανεπτυγμένων ώμων ή του σκελετού του.
