Rates: What could a cooperative bring us?

Cooperatives as we know them today have been around for more than two centuries. For their mutual benefit a group of workers, owners or other persons with a shared interest organized themselves. Could this again prove to be the effective answer for the rough times our profession is going through? We know price fixing is not allowed, yet organisations, companies and governments agree on rates, and the Dutch government had them even laid down in legal provisions. The free market is a euphemism for unilateral control. Some may fix, others cannot, apparently. To what extent can we, freelancers, fix prices too? I’d like to share with you the Dutch and EU legislation on co-ops, given that rules on cooperative societies vary per country, and inspire you with this tried and tested idea. It is worth organizing ourselves, be it in co-ops of interpreters/translators or otherwise, to effectively bring the extensive decrease of the rates in our profession to a halt.
Suïntha Uiterwaal holds an MA in Russian language and literature (University of Amsterdam) and a BA in interpreting. As a freelancer she works as a court and conference interpreter from Russian and English to Dutch. She is passionate about translating Russian literature and poetry. In 2010 she was one of the founders of the Association Registergroup for Interpreters and Translators http://registergroep.nl/ . This was established in order to bring the devaluation of the interpreting and translating profession in the Netherlands to a halt, stir up the professional landscape and protect and professionalise its representation.
